Mission Statement
Music in Action is a non-profit foundation committed to creating and sharing music as a catalyst for change. Its purpose is to connect musicians with important causes, making music that makes a difference.
We believe that the experience of joy and happiness is a vital right for people in every corner of the world. Music fosters joy. It has the ability to speak to the heart, transform ideas and inspire our collective humanity. It can call us into action to take responsibility for our world.
Music in Action aims to achieve the benefits of shared music by bringing live bands and interactive arts to communities affected by violence, poverty and fear – to celebrate life and raise awareness through active participation. The benefits extend both ways, affecting both the communities and artists involved. Artists can bring a new depth to their own creativity, and generate new ideas and material, including collaboration. Musicians can return to their own communities to share their experiences and documentation, through collected art and field recordings, thus bringing awareness of the issues home to a wider audience and bolstering advocacy and support.
Music in Action will be a resource for emerging and known artists committed to the foundation’s goals of fusing music with social activism, promoting insight and compassion,
and building bridges between diverse communities. To achieve these goals the foundation will do the following:
- Match musicians with organizations that address the issues they care about, such as education, health, human rights and environmental issues across the globe.
- Connect musicians with local grassroots and non-governmental organizations.
- Assist with project development; plan performances; produce creative workshops and field recordings in schools, faith centers and refugee camps worldwide.
- Strengthen collaboration between artists and communities; define objectives of exchange specific to the areas of need.
- Provide information on issues and cultural orientation, as well as guidelines for logistics, equipment, security and troubleshooting.
- Provide consultation about documentation and publicity for media distribution.
- Provide consultation on proposal development, fundraising and budget.
The second stage of the musical exchange is central to the vision of Music in Action.
After musicians return home, the foundation will provide continued consultation for planning various events, including lectures, slideshows, informal talks and performances that reflect on the experience of seeing music in action.
